Rachel Suzanne (she/her) hails from Vancouver, BC, where she has cultivated a vibrant career as both a performer and music educator. In addition to her extensive performing background, Rachel is a dedicated freelance music teacher, operating her own private studio and teaching through the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music (VSOSoM). She serves as Trainee Conductor of the Vancouver Bach Children’s Choirs, where she works alongside Marisa Gaetanne, and directs the newly formed Piccolinis ensemble. Whether on stage or in the classroom, Rachel is committed to fostering an environment that is inclusive and welcoming, driven by her belief in music’s power to forge deep connections both within oneself and with others.
Rachel was one of the inaugural students of the VSOSoM’s Performance Preparatory Programme under the guidance of Diane King. She later earned her Master of Music degree in Opera Performance from the University of British Columbia, studying with Marisa Gaetanne and director Nancy Hermiston. Her Bachelor of Music degree, awarded with distinction, was completed at Mount Allison University under the mentorship of Canadian soprano Sally Dibblee. Additionally, Rachel holds a Diploma of Music and a Conducting Certificate from Capilano University.
As a performer, Rachel excels across concert, recital, and operatic stages. She has been a soloist for many large works, including Orff’s Carmina Burana, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Mozart’s Mass in C Minor, and Handel’s Messiah. Major operatic roles include Mary Crawford in Mansfield Park, Gianetta in The Gondoliers, The Brothel Keeper in Shadow Catch, and Frau Fluth in Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor. Rachel has also collaborated with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in several of their Traditional Christmas Concerts.
Rachel’s enthusiasm for performance is matched by her dedication to music education. She believes that music can ignite confidence, creativity, and a sense of community in students of all ages. Her teaching philosophy is centered on igniting her students’ passion for music while equipping them with the skills and techniques necessary to reach their musical aspirations.
